Planting Peace in Palestine
Zatoun in Canada has partnered with the PFTA to create "Trees for Life" to help farmers recover from the enormous destruction of olive trees to Israeli settlers and army including devastating losses to the illegal Annexation Wall. The goal is to provide individual farmers with 25 to 50 olive tree saplings to replant or to help start in another location.
The program aims to serve farmers in greatest need: farmers who have had trees destroyed or lost access to land; small farmers with not enough trees to sustain their family; farms headed by women who own land or have had husbands killed or imprisoned; young starter farmers who have inherited or acquired land.
Through its first full year, the program planted 12,600 trees to benefit over 300 farming families. Despite a late start it raised over $30,500 USD worldwide. Zatoun contributed over $17,000 USD from oil sales proceeds including about $5,000 in direct donations. The goal is to raise $75,000 with partners from around the world. We hope to benefit many hundreds of farmers each year.
