“Zatoun is Palestine in a bottle”

Fair Trade Extra Virgin Olive Oil & Soap

Your Zatoun is My Zatoun

The suffix "ie" in Arabic denotes the possessive form.
and "Zatounie" is the possessive of "Zatoun".
Thus, "My Zatoun" - invest in a pit of Zatoun.

What is "Zatounie Investment Plan"?

Finally, supporters have chance to have their very own olive tree stake in Zatoun. Become a partner/investor in Zatoun with the Zatounie Investment Plan (rhymes with Loonie*).

* For our American friends, the "Loonie" is the affectionate name given the $1 coin which replaced the  $1 paper bill in the late 1980’s. The coin was launched with the engraved image of the common loon.

Why we need Zatounie

Zatoun is and has been a tremendous success from the start. We are doubling our orders with every cycle. This puts great pressure on cash flow. As our orders grow so does our need for cash to make the purchases of oil. At any We do not catch up with our cash needs beyond. This situation is exacerbated by the way we do "activist business" - a difficult juggling act - Zatoun pays the farmers in Palestine immediately at time of pick up the oil and Zatoun does not receive sale proceeds for as much as 6-8 months into the future. At the same time, we have not been retaining surplus as it is earmarked for supporting projects like Trees for Life and Project Hope. We always manage to sell out of the oil and have funds but available proceeds are not enough for the next order - hence the need to find investors or grants. Zatounie is one such effort.

For example, if you had $800 to invest in Zatoun, you would receive 8 Zatounies and the funds would help purchase enough extra virgin olive oil for 11 cases or 134 bottles.

How Zatounie works

Invest in one Zatounie or many Zatounies - each Zatounie is valued at $100 and is an informal, non-legal share or more precisely an ongoing, interest-free loan to Zatoun. Zatounie's can be redeemed at any time (with 2 months written notice). For your records and protection, you receive a promissory note from Zatoun detailing your investment and Zatoun’s obligations to you.

You can submit a cheque payable to "Zatoun" and indicate "Zatounie" in the memo line. We will forward you a promissory note (email or post). We will issue a report annually to summarize activity in the program.

Note: We believe that the $100 level is affordable to the majority of supporters. The value of one Zatounie has been set at $100 to take into the account the administrative work required to implement and maintain the program. To offer Zatoun at a lower denomination would increase the workload on already greatly stretched volunteers. Thank you for your understanding.

A Zatounie is valued at $100 in the currency received. For example, a Zatounie purchased with $100 USD is valued at $100 USD; and if paid in CDN, in like fashion it is valued at $100 CDN. The effective currency will be noted in the promissory note you receive.

Future

There may come a time when Zatounie is no longer needed to help support Zatoun’s purchases at which time the plan would be collapsed and Zatounies redeemed to all investors.
